Douglas Yazzie
Douglas Yazzie, boxing coach, painter, grandpa; this traditional Navajo is not just a painter for additional income. He’s driven to sketch, paint and use his fine eye for details to enhance his watercolors. Look carefully; he often hides a Dine’ object or meaningful symbol within his art. Even as age advances, this artist is prolific and still inspired to carve, paint and create beauty. Married for 47 years to retired teacher Darlene, he is actively involved in his children and grandchildren’s lives.
As a self-taught artist--he remembers using brown paper bags from the trading post for his sketch pads--Doug was instrumental in guiding reservation school districts to illustrate traditional stories, and his sketches are appreciated to this day by Navajo students. He’s exhibited his work in Europe and his work is displayed around the world.
